Hi, and welcome back to it's not rocket science five questions over coffee. I'm here with Phil Johnson, who is going to tell us all about emotional intelligence, which is a really fascinating subject. I'm really looking forward to this. So welcome to the podcast. It's not rocket science, five questions over coffee.
Phil Johnson 00:41
Ah, Stuart, thank you. It's a pleasure to be on your show.
Stuart Webb 00:45
Terrific. So let's start with the first question I always ask, which is, can you describe to us the sort of person you're attempting to help with your service?
Phil Johnson 00:55
Typically, it's the executive that has an urgent desire for better results than they're currently getting. And their organisation have been doing that now for the last 21 years.
Stuart Webb 01:07
And let's face it, they're pretty much every executive once we get better results, and they're currently getting so there's a rich pool of problem out there that you could help solve, what are the sorts of issues that you think that those executives are having, that you're trying to reach them with?
Phil Johnson 01:25
The things that have gotten them to where they are, are also the things that are standing in the way of getting better results. So they're trying to, they're trying to get better results than they're currently getting. By using the habits and micro skills that have gotten them to where they are not realising that that's not possible. If they want better results than they're currently getting. They need to change.
Stuart Webb 01:53
That's, that's a valid valid point. You know, a lot of them, though, try to do their best to sort of address these issues themselves. They dive into the mastermind groups, they do that what is what is it that you've seen them do, which hasn't really helped them get to where they really need to be?
Phil Johnson 02:12
What typically they've done, see, if you're not willing to change yourself, if you're not willing to do the emotional labour that change requires. The only other alternative you have is to try and use position based power to get others to change, to control and manipulate others to get them to change. And quite frankly, that's been the go to, for most for most people. And that's why according to Gallup, the current level of employee engagement worldwide is around 13%. So it's a huge problem.
Stuart Webb 02:52
13% is really low
Phil Johnson 02:54
13. Yeah, yeah. It's costly, the US economy alone, over a trillion dollars a year. If people don't feel safe to take risks, they're not going to be engaged. And there's almost a one to one correlation between the level of employee engagement, the level of customer engagement. So if your employees don't feel safe, then neither do your customers.
Stuart Webb 03:23
Good point. I love it. And you know that taking a risk, is the key to moving a business from where it is today to where it needs to be, isn't it it is that innovation it's taking, it's taking things further, if you sit in the safe zone, you are never going to in fact, we will know that if the economy is growing, and I know economies are not necessarily growing as fast as they could at the moment. But when an economy grows at three, four or 5% a year, if you're staying in the safe zone, you are retreating, you are going backwards because the rest of the world is beginning to expand around it.
Phil Johnson 04:00
Whenever we take an action and moves us outside of our comfort zone, we come up against significant both biological and sociological sources of resistance. That's why most people don't do it. Unless they're unless they haven't really urgent desire for better results, ie unless they're in a lot of pain. So this is the work that I helped them to do to help them to move outside of their comfort zone. And providing them the habits and the micro skills to get to get the results they want to achieve.
Stuart Webb 04:37
And I love the way that the use of that word Microsoft micro skills. So do you want to just describe to us a micro skill?
Phil Johnson 04:47
Ah yeah, being able to listen, without taking things personally. Being able to listen without resistance judgement or attachment outcome is a As a microscale,
Stuart Webb 05:01

Phil Johnson 06:07

Stuart Webb 06:10
And that is a really valuable free resource. Because I would imagine, you can get a lot of value from just one coaching session, and it will take you to, to the to the way in which the NBL programme can help you as long as you want to describe the NBL programme to us.
Phil Johnson 06:26
Yeah, it's a, it's a, it's a process of becoming more conscious of what's going on in you and around you. So that you can become a more inspirational leader, develop your emotional intelligence. And become more conscious see where we're only conscious about three to 5% of the time, the rest of the time, we're relying on our habits, to determine our behaviour and our results. And a lot of those habits are actually what's standing in the way of our getting better results. So I am the ROI. In going through this process. This programme never ends and it it helps you to get better results both in your career within your corporation and in your personal life.
Stuart Webb 07:22
And I know you post fairly regularly on LinkedIn, I'm just going to show the the LinkedIn post here where I know that you post it pretty much daily, you post something on LinkedIn to sort of give us insights into how we can improve.
Phil Johnson 07:34
Yeah, I created a newsletter on LinkedIn about maybe about four months ago. And it's all about related to the development of leadership and emotional intelligence. So it's a free newsletter, and hopefully, I can provide some some insights that can help people get better results.
Stuart Webb 08:03
Terrific. Listen, I've spent the last few minutes throwing questions at you. And you've been good enough to answer them, thankfully. But I'm going to make you do work. Now. There must be a question that you are wishing that I would ask you or thinking about why has he not asked me this question. I know I've asked you two or three questions which have given you the opportunity to give us a knowledge. But what would be the question that you would like me to have asked and then you know, once you've asked that question, would you please be good enough to answer it for us? Sure.
Phil Johnson 08:33
The question would be great for you to ask is, is there a way I can guarantee my success? Both in my career and in my personal life? Is there a process that can guarantee my success?
Stuart Webb 08:55
Great question, Phil, give us the answer, please.
Phil Johnson 09:00
The answer to the question is the development of your emotional intelligence. The ROI the development of emotional intelligence represents a critical part of our of our development that we never got. And because of the accelerating rate of global change, its value is going to continue to increase exponentially along with the along with the accelerating rate of change. So you see more and more companies hiring, promoting and developing emotional intelligence. And matter of fact, if you if you want to give you an example of a company, this company is currently doing over a trillion dollars a year in revenue. And their primary hiring focus is on the search for people with above average levels of emotional intelligence. Wow. company is apple. And that's why when you think about it, the energy you feel when you walk into an Apple Store is an example of a more emotionally intelligent environment. They're not trying to sell you anything. They're trying to understand your pain. And if possible, offer a solution to that challenge that pain. Whether or not you buy anything from them is secondary to their desire to want to serve you, they want you to have a great experience. And maybe you will tell your friends and they'll tell their friends. And that energy, if you think about it, think about the last time you were in an Apple Store, and try and compare and contrast that energy with the energy of the stores around it. Very different. So. So that's an example of a more emotionally intelligent environment. So the development of emotional intelligence, because of the accelerating rate of global change, represents the future of organisational development.
Stuart Webb 11:06
I love the example. Phil, one is a terrific example. It really demonstrates it's not just for the small business that thinks they need to do this, these are these are serious business people that are taking this to the next level and really looking for the people that can that can operate at that level.
Phil Johnson 11:28
It's critically important and we haven't really touched on this. But they say we're facing an absolute tsunami of change, with a 500 million year old brain that doesn't like change. Without getting too deep into the weeds in the end of the science. The development of our emotional intelligence is the solution to being able to deal with change. And the fear and anxiety that occurs when those changes caused us to leave our comfort zone. So emotional intelligence isn't a solution to the challenges we face. It is the only solution to the challenges we face. And it will become a multi trillion dollar industry. So getting back to your question and my question, the thing that I would tell your listeners is that if they want to guarantee their career and personal success, if they want to guarantee their organisational success, the key to that is the development of emotional intelligence. And by the way, I've been proving that all over the world for the last 21 years.
Stuart Webb 12:54
So that is a brilliant message to leave it on. Because I think that should spark enough people to get to this link to go to MD calendly.com MBL, coach, hyphen, chat with her, even if you just spent I have now a few minutes talking with this man getting to understand your emotional intelligence, your level of the emotional intelligence of the people that you've got to deal with. And I think that's the real key to some of this. But let's just be let's just start with understanding yourself in order to be able to understand others. Phil, what a brilliant message to leave it on. This is something that people need to take seriously. If Apple takes it seriously. You should take it seriously. Absolutely love that message. Thank you very much indeed.
Phil Johnson 13:37
