Simplicity - simple to achieve?
Simplicity is not easy to achieve. As Oliver Wendell Holmes said : “I wouldn't give a fig for the simplicity on this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity on the other side of complexity.” As we struggle with unread email, complex office processes and ever-expanding social networks, simplicity offers the respite of which we all dream.
But simplicity is not easy to achieve. Every CEO and Director I meet tells me that their business is amazingly complex and they always reflect that it is a result of the compleexiy of the world in which they operate. This is especially true in a recession, as we are now.
So what to do? Companies need to focus on the basics. The most powerful ideas are painfully obvious but are most often rejected as they seem too simple. Too often when I have been working with clients they tell me the changes have been so obvious in hindsight. But too often in business I find that the employees leave their common sense at home, and at work they actually admire complexity. We focus on breaking that perception down and starting to look at everything from the customer or consumer point of view. Amazingly when you ask a group to do that they start to find simple solutions and the obvious works very well. Instincts are obvious.
