As a business owner, maintaining a work-life balance can be tough, especially when you are struggling to make your business grow.
Spending time with family and friends becomes even more difficult. While you struggle to keep everything in order, excessive work, short deadlines, meetings, and pitching for new clients can create more hurdles to maintaining a work-life balance.
As a founder, podcaster, CEO, author, and host speaker, I’ve been through this phase in the early days of growing my business, but I overcame it by following tips that I’m going to share with you today.
So, let’s dive in to help you manage your work and personal life.
1. Leave Work at Work by Setting Clear Work Hours
Being in charge of your own business means you'll often be very busy, especially when handling work responsibilities and managing your team. This can consume a lot of your energy, leading to a poor work-life balance.
Therefore, a great way to maintain balance without compromising your personal life is by establishing set working hours and adhering to them.
While the idea of taking breaks or leaving tasks pending might be daunting, it's equally important to save time for yourself at the end of each workday, allowing you to unwind and planning for the next day.
Starting this habit might not be easy, as feelings of guilt for stepping away from work can arise. To overcome this, compile a list of tasks that need completion by by the end of the next day.
Construct a manageable to-do list, make sure that you identify the ONE THING the next day which will move your business forward. Do that one action first the next day. Have a couple of other task as well so that you can start them, but if they are not completed, you managed to do the ONE THING you needed to move the business forward.
By adopting this approach, you'll find it easier to leave your work at the workplace. You'll have more time to relax, and you'll be all set to work well again the next day.
Now, let's jump to the second tip, which helps you get the burden off your shoulders.
2. Learn to Delegate Tasks
Delegating tasks can be tricky for you, but keeping a healthy work-life balance depends on delegating your tasks. I have a short video course on this subject with the simple process i have taught to hundreds of business owners and works a dream - you can check that out at the-complete-approach.com/courses
Where delegation helps you share your burden and gives you more time, it also helps you concentrate on the key aspects of your business.
For instance, instead of managing finances that don't bring any value to the table, you can focus on improving your proposal writing to generate more leads and sales. This is an important rule; your focus must always be revenue-generating activities. Everything else should be delegated.
Now, with more efficiency and fewer hassles, let's discuss our third tip to help you ensure work-life balance.
3. Say 'No' to Excessive Work
While running a business, you'll try to get maximum leads and sales, that may lead to low priced, excessive work. However, you should acknowledge that working beyond your daily ability can cause burnout and affect your health and business alike.
Where a full work pipeline seems profitable at the start of your business, it can be lead you to taking on work where you should have said ‘no’. So, learn to say 'no' to the opportunities that offer excessive tasks with lower profit rates.
Another thing that you need to consider is setting clear boundaries between your professional and personal lives. For instance, I’m sure you’ll have relatives who will want things from you as a business owner, it may be painful but sometimes you are going to have to say no or ask them to pay for your work.
After you have learned to say no and keep healthy boundaries in your professional and personal life, let’s move to the last tip.
4. Make Time for Yourself, Not Just Family
As a business owner, you'll be bogged down with the burden of task completion and routine work required to boost your business's potential.
Thus, with all the pressure, you try to work even harder and struggle to take out some time for your family and totally forget about yourself - taking out some moments for yourself is essential to keep everything in momentum. If you're particularly busy during the day, practice yoga, meditation, or read a book for a few hours each morning. I chose to put a ‘meeting with myself’ in the diary to protect this time. It's also important to have an engaging hobby like playing music, reading books, or painting to give you a chance to relax and boost your overall well-being. Notice that doing so you'll be able to concentrate more on your work, be proactive towards potential risks, and generate ideas to boost your business growth - it’s a source of inspiration.
